Cross of Life Bible Study Method

To learn more from the scripture than just reading it, we encourage you to go deeper. The Cross of Life Bible Study Method is an in-depth approach to studying any passage in scripture. It is a guide to help us understand the content, purpose, and application of God's Word.

Content - Who? What? When? Where?

Who? (names and characteristics of those mentioned and/or those speaking)
What? (main facts, events, ideas, issues, consequences, repeated words, phrases, etc.)
When? (sequence of events in order, historical setting, when did or when will something occur)
Where? (places mentioned, what did/will happen there)

***Write one short, summary sentence of the passage (10-15 words).***

Overal Purpose - Why?

Why is this passage in Scripture?
What is it's significance for the reader as a believer? as an unbeliever?
What overarching principles, lessons, truths, or themes are taught or reinforced in this passage (usually 1-4)?
What do you learn about the character of God, Jesus Christ, or the Holy Spirit?

***You may want to choose one key verse from the chapter to memorize on your own.***

Life Application - How?

- How?

How does this passage apply to me?

For each main principle or theme, think of one or more application questions that motivate some sort of specific action or resolve on your part. Try to be time specific. Try to avoid questions that only require a simple yes or no.

Use words and phrases such as How can I? When have I? What promise, command or warning do I need to apply better? In what area of my life am I...

Example: NOT: Am I being obedient to complete the repetitious tasks that God has called me to at this time? BUT RATHER: How can I be more obedient to complete the repetitious tasks that God has called me to at this time?

Choose one or more of your application questions to answer, and write a specific plan of action to be carried out as soon as possible. Write how and when you’ll complete this resolve.

***You may want to keep a journal of passages you study, the summary sentence you come up with for the passage, a key verse, and the application question(s) and answer(s) you intend to keep. This will serve as a great accountability and also as an encouragement to your personal growth.***
